The person Sokka is pretending to be in this episode is NOT Sherlock Holmes, but Judge Bao.

Bao Zheng (包拯, 999 – 1062), was an exemplary judge from the Northern Song Dynasty. He is remembered for his brave deeds and clever deductions and fair sentences.

Edited:

Some of his other names are:
Bāo Gōng (; “Lord Bao”)
Bāo Qīngtiān (; “Clear-Sky Bao”)
Bāo Lóngtú (; “Dragon-Design Bao”)
Bāo Dàizhì (; “Rescriptor Bao”)

This might explain why the pipe is shaped like a dragon.

One of his famous cases: The Cat for Crown Prince Conspiracy

Bao Zheng met a woman claiming to be the mother of the current Emperor Renzong. She had been Consort Li, an imperial concubine of Emperor Zhenzong’s, before falling out of favor for supposedly giving birth to a dead cat. What really happened was a jealous Consort Liu plotting with eunuch Guo Huai to secretly swap Li’s infant son with the skinned animal minutes after birth. The infant eventually became Emperor Renzong, but he refused to accept Judge Bao’s findings. Faced with this, Bao ordered a set of beatings for the emperor for failing to oblige filial piety; his Dragon Robe was beaten instead. Eventually Emperor Renzong officially accepted that Consort Li was his mother and elevated her as the new Empress Dowager.

A tip of the hat to: lightinstone and boredstudent who pointed this out to me.

The hat Sokka is Wearing is Called 乌纱帽 Wu Sha Mao.

This kind of hat is worn by government officials. It originates in the Eastern Jin Dynasty but by the Ming Dynasty it had become synonymous with holding government position. Material and decoration depending on the rank and position the official is holding.

As for that episode, I still feel that Sokka’s outfit, the pipe and hat, are a play on something. The first thing that came to mind was Sherlock Holmes, but the hat does not match that at all. Holmes is not a government official. Is this some other movie/cartoon/book reference I am missing?

Sokka is Judge Bao.

The Hat Katara Wears as the Painted Lady is Called ‘Wei Mao’.

The 帷帽 wei mao style hat was created in the Jin dynasty, the style continued to be worn during the Tang Dynasty, but with a higher, conical top-hat like, hat. Click me for image.

The Jin Dynasty晋朝was a dynasty in Chinese history, lasting between the years 265 and 420 CE. There are two main divisions in the history of the Dynasty, the first being Western Jin (ch: 西晉, 265–316) and the second Eastern Jin (ch: 東晉 317–420). Western Jin was founded by Sima Yan, with its capital at Luoyang, while Eastern Jin was begun by Sima Rui, with its capital at Jiankang. The two periods are also known as Liang Jin (ch: 兩晉 lit, two Jin) and Sima Jin by scholars, to distinguish this dynasty from other dynasties that use the same Chinese character, such as the Later Jin Dynasty (ch: 後晉).

The man on the left is a civil servant, wearing a Liang Guan of the First Rank.

The Liang Guan (Ridged Guan) 梁冠 (fig. 2.4) is the standard court Guan of civil servants across all Han Chinese dynasties. According to the Ming text Sancai Tuhui 三才圖會, it is squarish, with the front lower than the back, tilting slightly backwards, has an enclosing edge, with an open front and a closed back, and is ridged according to statuses as follows: 7 ridges for First Rank, 6 ridges for Second Rank, 5 ridges for Third Rank, 4 ridges for Fourth Rank, 3 ridges for Fifth Rank, 2 ridges for Sixth AND Seventh Rank, 1 ridge for Eighth Rank AND Ninth Rank.

I am a bit torn as to which jin (headdress) they are depicting here. Both, Ru Jin and Zhuangzi Jin, seem possible.

Ru Jin are mainly worn by scholars, Zhuangzi Jin by scribes and priests.

How To Choose A Chinese Teapot - By Daniel Lui

  • Any tea is best made in clay teapots and the best teapots are made from “Purple Clay” (Zisha) from the Yixing (Yee-zhing) area of China
  • Zisha clay has excellent porosity and heat handling properties that significantly improves the taste of tea when compared to tea made in glass, porcelain or glazed teapots
  • A Yixing teapot should only be used for one type of tea
  • High-fired teapots with a finer, thinner clay are excellent for use with any tea and a must for Green, White and Oolong teas. Low-fired teapots that use a thicker and more porous clay work best for Black Tea (called Red Tea in China) and Pu-Erh Tea.

Handy little informative guide and interesting read on how to buy tea, teapots etc. Uncle approves.

As for Chinese tea, I personally prefer Tie Guan Yin and Dian Hong. And sorry Uncle, I do not share your love of jasmine tea. I’ve always felt that adding extra strong flavor too often is meant to hide the fact that the tea itself is bad quality.

The sign over the door reads: 寧三天不食莫一日無茶

“Better three days without food, than one day without tea.”

And, no, Uncle, we’ve seen you drool over roast duck and fried festival food. So not buying this from you, no matter how much you love tea.
