Love Glows Brightest in the Dark - Well Glow-worms do Anyway :D

There is a Natural Wonder in New Zealand that strongly resembles the Cave of Two Lovers. Well, the glowing in the dark part at least.

The Waitomo Glow-worm Caves attraction is a cave at Waitomo on the North Island of New Zealand, known for its population of glowworms, Arachnocampa luminosa. These glowworms are found exclusively in New Zealand and are around the size of an average mosquito. This cave is part of the Waitomo Caves system that includes the Ruakuri Cave and the Aranui Cave. The name “Waitomo” comes from the Māori words wai, water and tomo, hole or shaft. The local Māori people had known about the caves for quite some time before the local Māori Chief Tane Tinorau and an English surveyor, Fred Mace, did an extensive exploration in 1887.

Are there any surviving Air Nomads? Is Chong an Air Nomad?

The Air Nomads and their genocide are based on, and a commentary on, the genocide of the Tibetans. Read the blog entries about this: One, two, three.

In canon we never really find out if there are any survivors of the genocide, but look at the hippies:

Chong is wearing something resembling traditional Tibetan clothes.Compare the off-the-shoulder sleeve that is a prominent feature of traditional Tibetan clothing.

Does this mean there was a population of the Air Nomads that did not live in the temples? Or that Chong and his people are descendents of Air Nomads that survived?

This seems a bit too coincidental, especially taking the pointed conversation Aang and Chong have about being nomads into consideration.

Note: all Air Nomads WERE benders. It has been 100 years. There is no saying what happened to any that survived, or that Chong is even 100% Air Nomad. Keeping your culture when hiding/escaping being massacred is kinda hard. Who knows how much of that survived if they had to hide their bending abilities, and how quickly bending teaching would get lost if that was the case.

That, or he’s an appropriating ass :P

Cave of Two Lovers

The sign at the entrance says ‘Lover’s Cave’. The font of the calligraphy is called:

Seal script 篆书 zhuànshū is an ancient style of Chinese calligraphy. It evolved organically out of the Zhōu dynasty script (see bronze script), arising in the Warring State of Qin. The Qin variant of seal script became the standard and was adopted as the formal script for all of China in the Qin dynasty, and was still widely used for decorative engraving and seals (name chops, or signets) in the Han dynasty. Ever since, its predominant use has been in seals, hence the English name. The literal translation of its Chinese name 篆书 (zhuànshū) is decorative engraving script, because by the time this name was coined in the Han dynasty, its role had been reduced to decorative inscriptions rather than as the main script of the day.
