The Lion-turtle  - Yu The Great - Magic Squares - Feng Shui

The pattern on the shell of the lion-turtle is not just any shape, but a magic square.

Magic squares are kinda cool:  "…a magic square is an arrangement of numbers (usually integers) in a square grid, where the numbers in each row, and in each column, and the numbers that run diagonally in both directions, all add up to the same number.“ Link

The specific one this is referencing is the Lo Shu Square (see middle picture) which is used in Feng Shui (風水) i.e. the believe and practice of placing objects in relation to the flow of chi/qi (氣) ‘natural energy’.

That the lion-turtle shares a connection to the flow of chi is not surprising, considering that it teaches Aang how to energy bend.

Lo Shu and the Story of Emperor Yu

Standing at the river’s edge, the Emperor Yu-Huang watched the mighty Huang-He (Yellow River) rush before him.

Emperor Yu enjoyed the river. Looking out to the opposite side of the river, Emperor Yu slowly allowed his gaze to drop until he was looking at the river’s edge right below his feet. It was at that moment that he saw the divine turtle.

Emperor Yu had seen the divine turtle before, but as a pattern in the stars, never this close. Every night, right before he went to bed, Emperor Yu would look out his bedroom window and see the turtle in the night sky. The emperor knew the Lo River story and believed that the turtle was a symbol of good luck. Just before he went to sleep the emperor would look at the turtle to ensure continued good luck. Now it was right before the emperor, swimming slowly at the river’s edge.

The emperor was familiar with the shape of the creature, but the detail of the shell that Emperor Yu now saw was new to him.

A turtle’s hard back is half of the tough house that protects its body from enemies. The roof of this house looks like puzzle pieces glued together to form two circles around a rectangle. Emperor Yu looked long at these shapes on the turtle’s back and noticed a pattern of dots etched on them.

Starting next to the turtle’s right leg was a square formed by four linked dots. Traveling around the shell as the hands of a clock travel, the emperor came next to nine dots in a row. At the five o'clock position of a clock face there were two dots. At the bottom or six o'clock position was a row of seven linked dots. Next came a rectangle etched by six dots, and then a solitary dot at the nine o'clock spot. A long rectangle of eight dots followed, and at the top was a short line of three dots. In the center of all these dots was the intersection of two lines sharing five dots.

What did this all mean, the emperor wondered. Was the divine turtle giving a signal?

As the river became dark, Emperor Yu lost sight of the turtle and started for home. Walking slowly, the emperor thought about the different numbers and their positions one to another.

Emperor Yu added up the numbers many different ways. What did the magic sum have to do with him? Was it years of good luck? Or was it years to live? The questions came easily, but the answers were nowhere to be found. Emperor Yu was troubled.

He had come to the river’s edge to seek tranquillity, and instead had found doubt. The divine turtle had visited, but instead of bringing good luck he had left uncertainty. What was the emperor to do?

“Hey, look at these weird lion-turtle things!”  - Aang, The Library

The lion-turtle that shows Aang how to energy-bend (in finale) is actually mentioned in season two. When Aang leaves through some drawings in the spirit library he points it out to Sokka.

Sparky Sparky Boom Man aka Combustion Man controls his bending via his ‘third eye’.

The third eye (also known as the inner eye) refers to a dharmic spiritual tradition (e.g. in Hinduism) where the third eye also known as ajna chakra. The anja chakra stands for 'command’ or 'summoning’. It is located around the middle of the forehead, slightly above the junction of the eyebrows. The third eye is often associated with religious visions, clairvoyance, the ability to observe chakras and auras, precognition, and out-of-body experiences.

Fun fact: Some animals (like bullfrogs) have a non-spiritual version of a third eye called parietal eye.

Part Three: Energybending vs Taking Someone’s Bending

Again we can compare how Aang’s method and Amon’s differ.

Aang touches two chakras, Amon only one.

For Amon’s way of taking away bending only the touch on the forehead seems to be necessary (he never touched Tahno’s neck). No visible glowing is involved, either.

Aang touches two chakras and we see him glowing both times, even tough in Yakone’s case the glowing is a lot less strong than in Ozai’s, it is still visible.

Another thing I found interesting. Take a look at the gif. Amon seems to be pushing down on that man’s forehead with visible strength, as if pushing something in.

Is this a kind of bloodbending that locks chakras/chi flow? A kind of advanced chi blocking that requires no bending?

Should true energybending take that much physical force?

Energybending: Part One

Energybending: Part Two

How does Amon know about energybending? He was there!

Why does Amon not know about the chest-touching part of energybending?

He was standing behind Yakone and could only see part of it. The angle also implies that whoever watching is short. If that is Amon, could it be that Amon is Yakone’s son?

Explains his grudge, doesn’t it …

It would also make sense time-line wise. If forty years ago Amon was a kid, it would put him in Tenzin’s age range. Sounds about right to me, considering his voice and demeanor.

It could just be 3-rd person flashbacks, like Roku’s but it does tie in neatly with this (click for energybending theories). We will see :D

Thanks goes to falris for pointing me in the right direction.

Energybending - A Comparison (Part 2)

Click for part one

We now have more evidence that Amon’s energybending is fake.

To me it looks more and more as if he is trying to recreate it from stories he has heard or read.

When he takes away Tahno’s bending we can very clearly see that there is no spiritual energy glow, neither on Tahno, nor on Amon.

Since said energy has gone no where it is safe to assume that it got locked in, not taken away.

Note how this time Amon does not touch the back of the neck.

I am sticking with my previous theory that Amon is using the Ajna chakra:

Yintang Acupuncture Point

Location: Midway between the medial ends of the eyebrows  Actions& Effects:
  • Calms the spirit - insomnia, anxiety, stress.
  • Frontal headache.
  • Sinus issues - congestion, sinusitis.

When Uncle is teaching Zuko about lightning, he talks about bending needing a certain amount of inner calm. So, if you were to close that chakra and lock all the anxiety inside someone, making them incapable of being calm, that would effectively take someone’s bending away.

Quite clever actually, since the more terrified they are/become the more permanent this block will be. And Amon is sure laying it on thick.

Energybending - A Comparison

While the Lionturtle and Aang use the same technique, Amon seems to be using another method.

When Aang takes away Ozai’s bending, and when the Lionturtle teaches Aang energybending, they both thouch TWO points on the body, the yin tang and the ru zhong point aka the Ajna chakra and the Anahata chakra.

When Amon ‘takes away’ LBZ’s bending, he only touches ONE point, the yin tang.

Now what could that mean?

I think Amon is faking it. That he is making people believe that he is taking away their bending, when what he is actually doing is blocking a chakra.

Here is why:

Amon touches the yin tang point aka the Ajna chakra:

Yintang Acupuncture Point

Location: Midway between the medial ends of the eyebrows  Actions& Effects:
  • Calms the spirit - insomnia, anxiety, stress.

  • Sinus issues - congestion, sinusitis.

Note: This also means one should be able to undo it. Which is good, considering some of the promos we’ve seen.

Ru zhong, Ajna chakra, Anahata chakra.
